How Many Units of Botox Do I Need?

Most Botox treatments use 20 to 60 units. Forehead lines commonly take 10 to 30 units, frown lines 15 to 25 and crow's feet about 12 per side, and your injector sets the final number at a consult.

    The short answer

Most Botox treatments in Pennsylvania use between 20 and 60 units. A single area can take far fewer, and a full upper face takes more.

A unit is just a measure of the product. Botox is sold and priced by the unit, so the number of units you need is the biggest thing that sets your bill.

Nobody can tell you your exact number from a web page. Your muscles, your face and your goals decide it, and the injector makes the call at a consult.

    Typical units for each area

These ranges are common starting points. They are not a prescription, and your injector may use more or less.

    • Forehead lines: 10 to 30 units is typical.
    • Frown lines, also called the 11s: 15 to 25 units is typical.
    • Crow's feet: about 12 units per side, so around 24 in all.
    • Full upper face, meaning forehead, 11s and crow's feet together: around 50 units.

    What changes your number

Two people with the same lines can need different amounts. Stronger muscles usually take more units, and a smaller or lighter muscle takes fewer.

Brand matters too. Dysport, Jeuveau and Xeomin are dosed differently from Botox, so a unit of one is not the same as a unit of another. Never compare unit counts across brands.

Your goal also counts. Some people want every line softened, and others want to keep some movement. A good injector will often start on the low side and add more at a follow up if needed.

    What those units cost

Pennsylvania practices typically charge $10 to $25 per unit. Multiply that by the units in the plan and you can see a rough range before you book.

Here is an example, not a quote. A frown line treatment of 20 units at $10 to $25 a unit comes to $200 to $500. A full upper face of 50 units at the same prices comes to $500 to $1,250.

For comparison, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons lists a national average of $435 per treatment. That is a physician fee average, and it does not say how many units were used.

Our Botox cost page has a calculator that does this math for each area, so you can try your own numbers.

How to get an honest number

Book a consult and ask how many units the injector plans to use, and for which areas. Then ask the price per unit and the brand.

Be careful with a very low price per unit. It can mean the injector plans to use more units, or that the product is not what you think. Compare the total plan, not just the per unit price.

Ask whether a follow up visit is included. Many practices check your result after about two weeks and add a few units if needed.

    Common questions

How many units of Botox for forehead lines?

10 to 30 units is typical for the forehead. The injector chooses the number based on how strong your forehead muscle is and how much movement you want to keep.

How many units of Botox for frown lines?

15 to 25 units is typical for the frown lines between the brows. Your injector sets the final plan at a consult.

Is 50 units of Botox a lot?

Around 50 units is a common amount for a full upper face, which covers the forehead, frown lines and crow's feet together. Whether it is right for you is a question for your injector.

Can I ask for a specific number of units?

You can share what you want, but the injector decides the plan. A good injector will explain the number and why, and will often start low.
